Bio

Jack Strange’s work recontextualizes and re-imagines the functions of everyday objects and ideas in a manner that is humorous, clever, surprising and at times revelatory. Forging unexpected relationships between both ready-made and hand-made objects, the artist invites new meanings and interpretations of their uses that challenge human logic and the limits of human consciousness at large. Frequently, his work uses humor as a bridge to new understanding, providing an experience of what might be termed the internal logic of absurdity – the moment between fright and comedy when one does not fully recognize or understand something. Peeling back our preconceptions, Strange’s sculptures, drawings, videos, photography and mixed-media installations transform the mundane into the marvelous while addressing issues of creative identity, repetition, perspective, language, technology, biology and nature.

Born in 1984 in Brighton, England, Strange currently lives and works in London. He received a BFA from London’s Slade School of Fine Art in 2007, and has since exhibited his work throughout Europe and the United States.

he artist’s most notable presentations include Within Seconds, a solo exhibition at the former Arthouse at the Jones Center in Texas (2011), along with group exhibitions at Sammlung FIEDE – Schlachthaus in Aschaffenburg, Germany (2013), Guimarães 2012 CEC, Asa Factory in Portugal (2012), V22 Workspace in London (2012), Zabludowicz Collection in London (2011), Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2011), Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery in the UK (2010), and the Royal Society of British Sculptors in London (2010), among others.
